Breaststroke

Here are the basics for swimming Breaststroke.

  • Instead of rotation, we have undulation (up and down movement, like a wave).
  • Eyes should stay looking at the bottom of the pool (head/neck should remain inline with spine).
  • Overall timing: start pull, take a breath, shoot hands back forward, kick, then glide.
  • Every stroke cycle starts and ends with arms/hands extended out infront of body and feet together.
  • Every stroke cycle gets one pull, one breath, and one kick.
  • Breaststroke Kick Specifics

  • FLAT FEET, do not point toes.
  • Bend knees, bring feet toward surface, make a circle motion and bring feet back together.
  • I tell my swimmers up, out, and around. The goal is to push water with the inside of the foot, not the top.
  • Breaststroke (arms) specifics

  • Arms start infront of body.
  • Pull hands out in a circle motion at the same time, and turn them around when they hit the chest, extending arms forward.
  • Hands do not come out of the water.

    Breathing

  • When hands start to pull, body should come out of water slightly and that's where a breath should be taken.
